We’ve removed the camouflage! For the first time, we’re showing what the new 2027 BMW X5 really looks like — without disguise!
While an electric version called the iX5 will be introduced, most gasoline and hybrid versions of the new X5 look very similar to the current model. The major changes are inside: the cabin now features a cutting-edge Panoramic Display stretching across the upper dashboard from pillar to pillar. This means the traditional digital instrument cluster is gone — a move that not all BMW fans will appreciate.
Even more controversial is the removal of the familiar iDrive controller. The new iDrive X system focuses on touch and voice commands. The steering wheel now features touch-sensitive buttons and a new sporty design, including a red 12 o’clock marker and signature M stitching, signaling the M Performance trim.
The interior is inspired by Neue Klasse concepts: a massive 17.9-inch touchscreen, a new toggle-style gear selector, rotary volume knob, and hazard button are all presented in a minimalist, premium layout. The center console opens from both sides and appears to include cupholders.
The exterior of the X5 has also seen significant changes. According to the leaks, we are looking at the M60e model with four exhaust pipes and a charging port on the front left fender — confirming the presence of a plug-in hybrid. It’s likely based on the M760e xDrive setup, delivering up to 571 hp and 800 Nm of torque, even more than the XM 50e.
This model is expected to carry the internal code G65. In the U.S., powerful V8 versions such as the X5 M60 xDrive and X5 M Competition are expected to remain. The lineup may also include 50e xDrive, 40d xDrive, 40 xDrive, and rear-wheel-drive 40 variants. Four-cylinder engines will likely be reserved for the Chinese market only.
Rumor has it the all-electric iX5 will come exclusively with dual-motor setups — 50 xDrive, 60 xDrive, and the top-tier M70 xDrive, which may match the performance of the i7 M70: up to 650 hp and 1100 Nm of torque with Launch Control enabled.
