Unlocking Audi via smartphone already in development

Continental has officially confirmed that the new electric SUV Audi Q6 e-tron is equipped with the advanced CoSmA digital access system, which is based on ultra-wideband (UWB) technology. This solution takes the convenience and security of keyless access to a fundamentally new level.

Thanks to CoSmA, Audi Q6 e-tron owners can unlock, start, and even share access to the vehicle using a regular smartphone — without needing a physical key. The system can determine the device's position relative to the car with centimeter-level precision, providing strong protection against so-called relay attacks — one of the most common methods of stealing keyless vehicles.

If a thief tries to intercept or spoof the signal, CoSmA not only checks for the presence of the signal but also verifies the physical proximity of the authorized device. This is made possible by combining UWB technology with the energy-efficient Bluetooth Low Energy protocol. The software is centrally managed via the vehicle's main control unit and is compatible with most popular mobile platforms.

The CoSmA system has already received recognition from industry experts, having been awarded the prestigious German Innovation Award — an honor celebrating the most forward-thinking and user-centric innovations. Audi Q6 e-tron is not the first vehicle to adopt this technology: Continental already supplies similar solutions to other premium brands and is considered a pioneer in the field of digital access.

According to Jean-François Tarabbia, Head of Architecture and Network Solutions at Continental Automotive, the integration of CoSmA in the Audi Q6 e-tron highlights the growing importance of digital security and convenience for modern car owners: “We are equipping an important new electric Audi model with a reliable and extremely user-friendly solution.”

The Audi Q6 e-tron is positioned as a premium mid-size electric SUV. It is built on the PPE platform developed in cooperation with Porsche and manufactured at the brand’s main plant in Ingolstadt.
