BMW confirmed: “There are currently no plans to integrate Apple CarPlay Ultra”
CarPlay Ultra is a new, enhanced version of Apple CarPlay introduced in 2023. Unlike the standard version, which operates solely on the central multimedia screen, CarPlay Ultra enables deep integration of the smartphone with the vehicle’s entire dashboard.

CarPlay Ultra displays information not only on the main screen but also on:
- - the digital instrument cluster (speedometer, navigation, etc.);
- - the HUD (head-up display projected onto the windshield);
- - the front passenger display, if equipped.
With CarPlay Ultra, users can control:
- - climate control,
- - media playback,
- - navigation,
- - vehicle settings — directly from the iPhone using the familiar Apple interface,
- - and use voice commands via Siri.

CarPlay Ultra is designed to replace the in-car system with the iPhone’s interface, making driving more familiar and personalized for Apple users. It’s especially convenient for those already immersed in the Apple ecosystem who want to see their apps, maps, music, and notifications in a native format — without switching between iOS and the car’s interface.
Essentially, it’s a move toward vehicles where the smartphone becomes the core interface, and automakers cede part of the user experience to Apple. Not all brands are ready for this shift — many fear losing control over data, brand identity, and monetization opportunities.
The deep integration has caught the attention of several OEMs. Aston Martin became the first official partner, with upcoming CarPlay Ultra launches expected in models from Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis.
However, a BMW AG spokesperson stated: “BMW currently has no plans to integrate Apple CarPlay Ultra.” This reflects BMW’s strategic focus on developing its own iDrive X platform, debuting in Neue Klasse models starting with the iX3. iDrive X includes a groundbreaking Panoramic Display — a wide-format HUD that spans the bottom edge of the windshield, fully integrated with BMW’s digital environment. BMW will continue to support standard CarPlay and Android Auto — but only on the central screen, without access to the instrument cluster or HUD, according to BimmerFile.
As of now, BMW joins other premium brands — Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, Polestar, Renault — in opting out of CarPlay Ultra due to concerns over interface control and user data privacy.
Remaining brands planning to adopt CarPlay Ultra include: Acura, Aston Martin, Ford, Genesis, Honda, Hyundai, Infiniti, Jaguar, Kia, Land Rover, Lincoln, Nissan, and Porsche.
BMW chooses iDrive X over CarPlay Ultra to maintain brand identity and full control over the digital in-car experience, ensuring a unique and consistent interface for its users.

Data control and monetization: by using its own system, BMW retains full control over telematics, subscriptions, and analytics.
Technological synergy: iDrive X is designed as a unified BMW ecosystem, and handing over control to Apple could disrupt that integrity.
