Although Smart has long moved away from the concept of ultra-compact vehicles, the spirit of the iconic ForTwo may return — but in a new, modern form. Behind the scenes, discussions about the potential release of a successor — the mysterious Smart #2 — are actively underway.
Dirk Adelmann, head of Smart's European division, stated: “If we decide to return to the A-segment, we’ll do it 100% in the Smart style.” However, a final green light from top management has not yet been given.

The upcoming Smart #2 is expected to be much smaller than the #1 and #3 models, while maintaining the brand’s DNA: frameless doors, maximum interior space, and signature compactness. The design won’t follow a retro style — the company is betting on futurism rather than nostalgia.
According to insiders, the interior will remain a two-seater but offer an updated multimedia system and high-quality materials. As for the platform, Smart is considering developing a new architecture in collaboration with Chinese giant Geely — Mercedes' partner in the brand.

The expected price of the new model is around £20,000, but Smart does not aim to compete with ultra-budget EVs like the Dacia Spring. The main goal is to combine affordability and premium quality without harming the brand image. As Smart UK CEO Jason Allbutt noted: “Affordable doesn't mean cheap. We want Smart #2 to feel like a high-quality, modern product.”
A sportier Brabus version is also being discussed, which could offer around 150–200 hp — enough for lively city driving without going overboard.
If the project is approved, a concept car may be unveiled within the next 12–18 months, and the production model could appear by the end of the decade. This won’t be just another car — it could be Smart’s return to its roots, but on a whole new level.
