Skoda brings diesel back to India and prepares to unveil flagship models

After nearly a five-year break, Skoda is shifting its strategy and once again betting on diesel in India. At the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025 (Auto Expo-2025), the Czech brand unveiled two major new models — the Superb sedan in 4x4 configuration with a 2.0-litre diesel engine and the sporty Octavia RS. Both are expected to go on sale by the end of 2025 and will be imported fully built, with no local assembly.

Head of Skoda’s Indian division Petr Janeba noted that in the past, diesel models accounted for up to 80% of the brand’s local market share. Diesel variants were available for the first-generation Octavia, Superb, and Rapid. The company abandoned diesel in India five years ago, but now plans to bring it back, responding to consistent demand and the success of rivals like Hyundai, Kia, Tata, and Mahindra.

The main symbol of Skoda’s diesel comeback is the Superb 4x4. Under the hood is a 2.0-litre engine delivering 193 hp and 400 Nm of torque, paired with all-wheel drive. In addition to this version, the Indian market will also get a 2.0 turbo-petrol engine with 204 hp, while the top-spec Superb RS will feature a 265 hp unit. Positioned in the premium segment, the Superb will rival the Toyota Camry.

The Octavia RS showcased at Auto Expo-2025 is a facelifted version of the fourth generation, powered by a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine producing 265 hp and 370 Nm. This sporty variant has no direct competitors in India, and Skoda expects it to attract car enthusiasts. The brand has previously sold limited batches of Octavia RS 230 and RS 245 in India and now aims to repeat that approach.

Production of the Superb has been shifted to Bratislava, Slovakia, where there is no facility to manufacture CKD kits for India. Due to this and the relatively low projected volumes, Skoda decided to import both the Superb and Octavia RS as CBUs. This ensures a premium positioning but will lead to higher prices compared to locally assembled models.

The return of diesel to Skoda’s Indian lineup, along with the simultaneous launch of two iconic models, clearly signals the brand’s intent to strengthen its presence in the upper segment of the market and reclaim lost ground.
