Ford recalls nearly 300,000 pickup trucks due to malfunctions

American automaker Ford ended 2024 with a bold and controversial move — on December 20, the company announced the recall of 295,449 diesel pickups due to an issue that may affect engine power. The way the issue is being addressed has surprised many experts.

The recall applies to Super Duty models from 2020 to 2022, including:

  • F-250 and F-350 (286,138 units),
  • as well as heavier-duty versions F-450, F-550, F-600,
  • and a number of commercial pickups F-650 and F-750.

The root of the problem lies in the fuel pumps, which do not handle aged biodiesel well. Over time, deposits can form on internal components, disrupting fuel flow and potentially causing power loss or pump failure.

According to a chronological report published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the issues trace back to the COVID pandemic, during which many trucks sat unused for extended periods, allowing deposits to accumulate in the fuel tanks.

In August 2021, Ford began installing upgraded pumps with improved design, featuring larger bearing and valve body clearances to enhance fuel flow and cooling.

Interestingly, the pumps were supplied by Bosch, and similar issues were observed in other automakers’ vehicles as early as 2021. However, Ford adopted a wait-and-see approach, ultimately deciding on the recall only after analyzing 2,070 warranty claims, 498 field reports, and 58 customer complaints.

Notably, the pumps will not be replaced. Instead, the manufacturer will release a software update to improve pump cooling and prevent the formation of aged biodiesel deposits. Dealer notifications have already begun, and individual owner notifications will start on January 13, 2025.

Amid this incident, it was revealed that Ford conducted a total of 67 recall campaigns in 2024, affecting 4,777,161 vehicles. That’s 13 more campaigns than in 2023, though the total number of vehicles affected dropped by 1.6 million. For comparison, Tesla led in total recalled vehicles — 5,135,991 units, while Stellantis had the most individual recalls: 72 cases.
