The manufacturer canceled the production of the MINI Cooper J03 and J01 – what happened?

Plans for the release of the electric MINI Cooper Convertible with the factory index J03 have been unexpectedly canceled. Industry sources reported the news, which has already sparked heated discussions among brand enthusiasts.

Until recently, it was assumed that the “green” convertible would become a logical continuation of MINI’s electric lineup and launch alongside the three-door J01 Cooper. Production was planned at the Oxford plant with partial localization in China, and the debut was expected in 2027. Now, however, these plans are a thing of the past.

The company has not yet provided official comments, but analysts point to a number of reasons. Among them are the challenges of profitability in the EV sector: the entry-level versions of MINI are supposed to remain relatively affordable, which reduces margins. The situation has also been complicated by the sharp rise of competition from China. Brands like BYD are producing increasingly advanced electric vehicles at significantly lower prices, forcing European automakers to adjust their strategies. Adding to this is demand uncertainty: the convertible segment has been shrinking in recent years, with even traditional gasoline-powered versions no longer breaking sales records. An electric version risked becoming a “niche within a niche.”

Despite the cancellation of J03, MINI is not planning to abandon convertibles entirely. The brand recently unveiled the gasoline-powered F67 Convertible, which will be available in the US and will likely remain the only way to experience “wind in your hair” behind the wheel of a MINI in the coming years.

The J03 project was based on the same technology as the electric J01 Cooper. The Cooper E version was to be equipped with a 184 hp electric motor and a 40.7 kWh battery offering a range of about 300 km. The more powerful Cooper SE would deliver 218 hp, a 54.2 kWh battery, and up to 400 km of range on the WLTP cycle. The idea was for the J03 to become not just a convertible, but a symbol of MINI’s transition into a new electric era. Now, however, that role will be taken up entirely by the J01 hatchback, the Aceman crossover, and the electric Countryman SE, produced in Germany.

As a result, the MINI convertible has remained faithful to gasoline, and the electric version has never seen the light of day. Whether this is a temporary sacrifice to preserve business or a final verdict on “open-air electromobility” remains an open question.
