Lexus and Toyota seat belts found to be unreliable

Toyota and Lexus have launched a large-scale service campaign: over 40,000 vehicles are being recalled due to a discovered defect in seat belts. The issue concerns the center seat belt in the second row of popular models like the Camry, RX, and NX.

During a scheduled component inspection, a defect was found in the seatbelt locking mechanisms. It was determined that the belts were manufactured by Joyson Safety Systems in Mexico and were exposed to heat during production. An internal investigation revealed signs of melting on the belts, caused by the use of a so-called “hot knife” during trimming. This reduced the structural strength and led to non-compliance with U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.

The recall affects 2025 model year Toyota Camry sedans and 2025 Lexus NX250, NX350, NX350h crossovers, as well as 2024–2025 Lexus RX350, RX350h, and RX500h. Camry is the most affected model, accounting for 35,529 of the 40,922 vehicles involved in the campaign.

Owners of potentially affected vehicles will receive official notifications by mail closer to the end of March. Dealership staff have already been instructed to inspect the seatbelt locks and replace defective parts free of charge if necessary.
