Mercedes charging while parked? “Solar” paint could add up to +14,000 km per year!

Future EVs could top up their batteries right in the parking lot—no plugs or cables needed. Mercedes-Benz is working on Solar Paintwork: an ultra-thin photovoltaic layer applied like regular paint, but converting light into electricity. Under ideal conditions (calculations for Beijing), such a “body-as-panel” could add up to ~8,700 miles per year—around 24 miles a day. It won’t fully replace charging, but it will noticeably reduce reliance on the plug.

Engineers are exploring an active surface with solar cells rated up to 20% efficiency. The idea is simple: instead of separate panels, the roof, hood, and sides become a single energy source—cleanly integrated into the design with no compromises to aerodynamics or weight.

In parallel, Mercedes is preparing a revolution in battery architecture. A programmable micro-converter at the cell level will allow individual control of elements and maintain a stable 800 V on the HV bus regardless of the cells’ state of charge and health. The result: longer range, faster and more flexible bidirectional charging, and greater freedom for modular platforms.

Even the brakes are being rethought. Instead of traditional wheel-mounted mechanisms, there is a compact unit integrated into a sealed motor-transmission module. Claimed benefits include minimal wear, virtually no maintenance, zero corrosion and particulate emissions, no fade under high load, and lower noise. A side effect is improved efficiency and range.

Another vector is neuromorphic computing in collaboration with the University of Waterloo (Canada). Brain-inspired algorithms promise faster, more accurate recognition of signs, lane markings, and other road users—while being up to ten times more energy-efficient. That’s a direct step toward smarter driver assistants and robust performance in poor weather.

The takeaway is bold: Mercedes-Benz isn’t just easing the pain of recharging; it’s reshaping the EV’s very architecture. If the “solar” paint and companion technologies reach production, we’ll see quiet, long-legged, noticeably smarter EVs—topping up their range every time the light hits them.
