Mercedes-Benz’s Chief Designer Gorden Wagener made a bold statement: in his opinion, artificial intelligence could completely replace the profession of automotive designer within the next 10 years. He believes that technology is evolving so rapidly that algorithms will soon be able to perform most creative tasks, leaving humans only the role of curators.

Wagener emphasizes that Mercedes-Benz is already actively using AI in the development of new models. Although most of the ideas generated by machines are still technically difficult to implement, around 1% of these concepts have real potential. And according to Wagener, this number will only continue to grow.

“My position will most likely be taken by a machine in the future. And it will cost the company much less,” the designer says with irony.

At the same time, Wagener is not limited to cars — today he is responsible for the overall visual identity of the brand, including Mercedes-Benz Places projects in Dubai and Miami.

According to him, the architecture of these towers reflects the speed and dynamics characteristic of the brand’s automotive design — especially through balcony shapes reminiscent of sculpted car body curves.

Speaking about the development of future vehicles, Wagener notes: full autonomy is still far off. Although control is gradually being delegated to systems, traditional elements — such as the steering wheel and transmission selector — will remain in the cabin for a long time. Cars are increasingly turning into “smart homes on wheels,” but the fantasy of completely driverless control remains out of reach for now.

Commenting on the brand’s signature Hyperscreen, Wagener acknowledged that despite its innovation, the system has issues with graphics and functionality. Nevertheless, Mercedes-Benz has no intention of abandoning it. In the future, the focus in interiors will shift toward premium finishes rather than screen size.

His words signal not only the future of the designer profession but also the transformation of the very nature of automotive production — where machines increasingly create... other machines.
